According to recent box office reports, Venom has pushed Sony Pictures over the $1 Billion gross mark for 2018, making it the studio’s most successful since 2014.

In it’s opening weekend, the film grossed over $80M in the United States alone. During this weekend it has reportedly earned another $35M bring its domesticate gross to over $142M with an additional $235M earned overseas. This, in addition to other box office successes, has pushed the film to the $1B worldwide mark.

The film has quickly become one of the year’s most surprising box office success stories. Despite apparently having no connection to any previous incarnation of Spider-Man and an avalanche of negative reviews the film has become a relatively big hit for Sony. On a relatively small budget of $100M, the film has already earned its budget back with a healthy profit. And while we may not be asking for it, it has insured that we will be more then likely be seeing similar spin-offs for years to come.
