In its second weekend at the box office, Sony’s latest Marvel adaptation Venom starring Academy Award-nominee Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock grabs the top spot once again despite competition from fellow holdover A Star is Born and new releases First Man, Bad Times at the El Royale and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
Box Office Mojo is projecting Venom to earn an impressive $35.7 million in its second weekend. Compared to its opening weekend tallies of $80.2 million, this is only about a 55.5% drop. This is quite impressive given the film has not received the best reviews from critics. Even if critics weren’t as warm to the film, the numbers indicate that audiences are for the most part enjoying Sony’s first entry in their own Cinematic Universe that remains “adjacent” to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe where Spider-Man (Tom Holland) remains swinging around in.
Rounding out this week’s Top 5 at the box office include Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Star is Born at #2, Universal’s First Man at #3, Sony’s Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween at #4 and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Smallfoot at #5.
Venom is expected to be dethroned next week as Blumhouse’s highly-anticipated sequel Halloween opens in theaters. It will be interesting to see how Venom holds in the next few weeks.
