Director Ruben Fleischer opened up about his feelings regarding the negative reception towards Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Ruben Fleischer’s Venom launched  Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters and earned a worldwide total of $856.1 million at the box office. However, reviews for Venom were overwhelmingly negative and audience reception towards the Tom Hardy film was generally mixed.

During an interview with Fandom, Venom director Ruben Fleischer discussed the poor reviews after being asked what he might change about the Tom Hardy film. In response to the question, Ruben Fleischer said that he would change the critics’ reaction to Venom, adding that he was “bummed” and surprised considering many moviegoers enjoyed it:

“If anything, I would have changed the critics’ reaction to it. I was really bummed that people didn’t like it because it’s a crowdpleasing movie and I’m not sure if there was just blowback against Sony or people just worship Marvel. But I was really surprised that the critics [were gunning for it] because audiences really enjoyed the movie. And so many people who’ve seen it just appreciated that it was a fun superhero movie. So I was a little surprised. I don’t know what they were expecting.”

Ruben Fleischer will not return to helm Tom Hardy’s Venom sequel. Instead, Andy Serkis will helm the project from a script written by Kelly Marcel. Venom 2 is set to star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying and Woody Harrelson as Carnage. It is widely believed that Tom Hardy’s Venom 2 is the untitled Marvel project Sony has slated for release on October 2, 2020.

Here is the official synopsis for Ruben Fleischer’s Venom:
