How close was the crossover?

Was Venom ever supposed to meet Spider-Man on the silver screen? Tom Hardy clarifies his recent viral comments about how close a crossover came to happening.

Tom Hardy’s stint as Venom will go down as one of the oddest runs in all of superhero media. A controversial trilogy of action comedies which spawned the least successful cinematic universe in history, which followed a villain that never faced the hero he was created to fight. The fact that Sony never tried to get a Spider-Man, Tom Holland or otherwise, in those films will boggle the minds of film historians for decades to come.

But is that all really true? Most would say yes. But the other day, Tom Hardy made a comment to suggest that a meeting on Spider-Man and Venom was closer than anyone could have imagined. When reflecting on his time as the Lethal Protector with The Playlist, the actor teased that the two characters got as close as they could to meeting, even if it never materialized.

“We got close. We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun. And for all the reasons that you explained [regarding studio politics].”

“Fundamentally, for me, it would be for the kids. Because, you know, as much as adults love superhero films, as you can tell by the box office when they’re successful, I think I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are. And they don’t know why their favorite characters aren’t in films together.”

Was Tom Hardy’s Venom Going To Meet Spider-Man?

These comments spread through the internet like wildfire. People ran with their own narratives, pointing blame at everyone from Sony Pictures to…well…mostly Sony Pictures, as to why this crossover didn’t happen. However, it seems as though Tom Hardy’s comments weren’t as clear cut as some thought. When speaking about the above statement to AP News, Hardy clarified that the idea a Venom film with Spider-Man wasn’t on the verge of release.

“People embellish a story. I just said I would have loved to work with Spider-Man, but it never happened, which is a fact,. It hasn’t happened. And I’m no longer working with Venom…it is a shame because my kids would love to watch Venom and Spider-Man together. I would have liked that.”

It’s important to reread Tom Hardy’s specific comments regarding Venom’s potential crossover with Spider-Man. When the actor said they were “close as he could imagine getting”, he wasn’t referring to them being close to getting a movie made. Rather, that the two characters were as close as two characters could be without appearing in a film together. So with that in mind, it sadly seems as though there was never any intent on uniting the characters on the big screen.
