Tom Hardy Is Down For An R-Rated ‘Venom’ Sequel

Venom Tom Hardy

Although Sony’s Venom has received a PG-13 rating, Tom Hardy, who plays Eddie Brock in the film, is still game for starring in an R-rated film starring the iconic Spider-Man foe.

Venom is finally set to hit theaters next weekend, bringing the titular symbiote to the big screen for the first time since 2007’s Spider-Man 3. The trailers for the film promise a film that is full of Venom eating humans and battling other monsters along the way. That’s why some fans became disappointed in the film when it received a PG-13 rating, seemingly to keep the door open for a Spider-Man introduction somewhere down the line.

R-rated superhero films like Logan and the Deadpool franchise have been very successful in recent years, so it’s not a wild idea for Sony to follow a similar route. That being said, it seems that the studio wasn’t quite ready to go that dark just yet. According to Hardy, just because this origin film is PG-13 doesn’t mean that the franchise can’t go into more violent territory somewhere down the line. This is what Hardy had to say in about the subject in a recent interview with MTV.

“To be fair the thing could fulcrum into R-rated. It can fulcrum into for youth or children. My littlest ones they watch Spider-Man and Venom quite comfortably, and Venom toys appear and Lego appear in my nostrils in the morning. So it’s not like they’re scared by him, but at the same time, there’s a lot with the real estate that you can actually imbue with a complete sense of gratuitous ultraviolence if you really wanted to. And I think you’ve got the right people for that job if you want to push it because that’s where I’d love to go with it. And I’d love to go through all The Avengers as well with him. But that’s above my pay grade.”

Be sure to check out the full interview in the video here. There’s still plenty of mystery surrounding Venom, but all of those mysteries will be solved in just one week when the film hits theaters. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Venom as more information becomes available. What do you think about the film receiving a PG-13 rating?
