‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Trailer Promises A Funeral For A Fallen Friend

The latest trailer for Dark Phoenix, next year’s follow-up to X-Men: Apocalypse, featured a funeral for a character whose death seems to have a huge effect on the cast of mutants, including Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult).

Last night, the trailer for Dark Phoneix premiered and fans seem split on what to think about it. One thing that many fans seem worried about is that death teased in the trailer. Throughout the trailer, the devastating effects of the death can be possibly seen in characters, but we don’t know without the proper context. We see another moment of Magneto screaming in the air, Hank McCoy seems so enraged by what’s happening that he’s switching teams, but no identity has been revealed just yet as to who will bite the dust in the latest X-Men adventure.

Dark Phoenix is shaping up to be one of the darkest entries of the franchise thus far, aside from 2017’s Logan of courseFans across the internet have already begun speculating who is in that coffin seen in the trailer and the two that seem to make the most sense are Quicksilver (Evan Peters) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Quicksilver has been a fan favorite character since his brief appearance in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and it would certainly be a heart-wrenching moment for his father Magneto, who is still unaware that he’s the young mutant’s father.

Mystique would also make for the best heart-wrenching death to turn McCoy’s moral compass just enough to join Magneto’s side. In the Dark Phoenix trailer, that funeral scene includes five members of the X-Men and the only ones visible are Professor X, Nightcrawler, Storm, and McCoy. There’s still no way of telling for sure who is going to sacrifice themselves in Dark Phoenix, so fans will just have to continue to speculate until the film hits theaters on Valentine’s Day.

The X-Men franchise is no stranger to death, especially when it comes to one of the main heroes biting it at the hands of Jean Grey possessed by the Phoenix Force. In X-Men: The Last Stand, co-written by Dark Phoneix writer/director Simon Kinberg, Cyclops was killed by Jean Grey very early on. Could Cyclops be killed again this time around? Will be sure to keep you updated on al news regarding Dark Phoenix as more information becomes available. Who do you think will die in Dark Phoneix? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.

“In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”

The film is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
