Shazam! Fury of the Gods was meant to blow past the original in scale and vision. However, a new video posted by director David F. Sandberg shows off a number of changes he made to a scene from the first film that was reshot to maintain continuity.
The Shazam! films went through a number of changes in the four years it took to produce the DC Universe sequel. The most notable of these changes was the removal of Michelle Borth from the role of Mary Marvel, which she played in the first film. Grace Caroline Currey, best known for her work as the non-powered Mary Bromfield, plays both the role of her civilian and superhero identity in the sequel.
The change almost every viewer would be able to spot would be the change in costumes between the first and second Shazam! film. The first film featured much more vibrant suits with lightning bolts that actively glowed. The sequel featured a much more realistic set of suits, including a now flat texture for the chest symbols. While these costume changes were originally set to be explained away by The Flash, the film’s delay caused Sandberg to want to reshoot the scene to ensure continuity in the flashback. The full video highlighting the changes between the scenes can be seen below:
The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are also currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies set to hit theaters this year. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DC Universe? Only newly-named DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran Safran know.
