James Gunn has responded to Vin Diesel’s claim he will be playing “Alpha Groot” in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to conclude the story James Gunn started in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy – the film that introduced Vin Diesel as Groot in the MCU. The walking, talking tree, only capable of uttering the words “I am Groot” instantly captured audiences’ hearts.
Following the death of Groot in the first Guardians film and Rocket subsequently regrowing him, audiences have seen a fully grown Groot, baby Groot and a teenage Groot. Now fans are wondering if another version of the character might appear in Vol. 3.
Vin Diesel Is Groot
Groot voice actor Vin Diesel had previously described Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Groot as “Alpha Groot,” but it sounds like director James Gunn wasn’t too sure what he was talking about.
It doesn’t take much to set fans’ imaginations ablaze and Vin Diesel’s comments might have got some Guardians of the Galaxy fans expecting a brand new physical form for the character. However, James Gunn revealed the comments were made before the actor had even read the script.
Clarifying that Vin Diesel was probably just hyping up his next – and possibly final – performance as Groot, James Gunn revealed on Twitter:
“Vin was musing out loud – he hadn’t read Vol 3. What you saw at Comicon was Groot in Vol 3, and he’s not ‘Alpha Groot.'”
It sounds like “Alpha Groot” won’t be an official title for Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – just Vin Diesel’s description of how Groot’s character has progressed. Interstingly though, it sounds like audiences can look forward to more of adult Groot in Vol. 3. Responding to another Twitter user who expressed their hope to see a fully grown Groot again, Gunn said “Well, you just might be in luck…”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji and Maria Bakalova.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Marvel film and Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum’s potential role in it, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
