SPOILER ALERT: The following article discusses how Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) exits AMC’s The Walking Dead in episode 9×05, “What Comes After”. Read at your own risk.
Episode 9×05 of AMC’s The Walking Dead entitled “What Comes After” is the swan song for the series’ main hero, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). After months of build-up following the announcement that Andrew Lincoln would be leaving the blockbuster series, we finally see how Rick Grimes is sent off.
Rick Grimes finds himself bleeding as he prepares to sacrifice himself to protect his family after leading a group of walkers to a bridge away from the camp. Rick ends up lifting his python to shoot at the dynamite to explode on this particular bridge. As he does so, Rick whispers his last words on the series, “I got them.”
However, despite being the last episode for Andrew Lincoln, Rick Grimes survives these events, leaving the door open for the series to explore the status of his character even after Lincoln’s exit from the series.
