‘WandaVision’ Star Emma Caulfield On Going From ‘Buffy’ To Marvel

Is there more to Emma Caulfield’s Dottie than meets the eye?

WandaVision Star Emma Caulfield recently talked with us about her role in the Marvel Studios series.

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s WandaVision is shaping up to be one of the strangest projects to ever come out of the Marvel Studios vault.  The series is shrouded in a mystery that is slowly starting to unravel. With its unsuspecting characters trapped in a sitcom world which appears to be created by Wanda Maximoff, Marvel fans can expect that the future of the series will be pretty revealing.

The second episode of WandaVision introduces audiences to a character trapped in Westview named Dottie, played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress Emma Caulfield. We recently had the chance to chat with Caulfield and she opened up about a lot of things, including transitioning from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to WandaVision. “Buffy was so long ago, I don’t know. That was a tiny, little show on a small network that ended up having this huge life. It started to build when it was on, but there was no huge support system or fanfare or built-in audience with it,” the actress told Heroic Hollywood. “So it’s not even in the same ballpark as entering into the Marvel Universe. It’s a whole other world.”

Caulfield isn’t necessarily well versed in big-budget superhero films, but she definitely watched some of Marvel Studios’ projects. “Yeah. I wasn’t too versed in it. I wasn’t a massive comic book fan in general, or goer,” said Caulfield. “I always found myself kind of reluctantly seeing them and then going, ‘Wow, that was so fun. That was such a good time,’ but my natural resting place was to go see some weird drama that maybe is in five theaters.”

The folks at Marvel Studios are generally pretty reserved with their castings, keeping everything close to the chest. Marvel rarely gives out scripts for actors to read and it appears that having a friend in the writers’ room doesn’t even change that. Emma Caulfield was brought in by her longtime friend and WandaVision head Jac Shaeffer to read for the role and it was pretty top secret. “Jac, like I said, she created the show. She wrote and directed Timer and I starred in that, and we’ve been friends for 10 years,” Caulfield revealed. “She called me and said, ‘Do you want to come be on my show?’ Like, ‘Yes. I do.’ Then she said, ‘Cool. I can’t really say much about it, it’s kind of super top secret, and I just need you to go and I’ll give you a scene; something to read. Your character’s name is Dottie. We need to just get Kevin Feige to sign off on you,’ and I was like, “No pressure there. Okay.” The actress went on to secure the role with Feige’s approval and the rest is history.

When we asked if there was more to Dottie than meets the eye, Caulfield said, “There’s more to everything in that town than meets the eye.” Do you think we can see more of Dottie in the future of the MCU outside of WandaVision?
