The WandaVision executive producer explained she didn’t know who Mephisto was until fans started theorizing about the villain.
All throughout WandaVision, Marvel fans were speculating as to who might be behind Wanda Maximoff’s situation or if she was being manipulated by outside forces. And with certain references to the devil, many assumed that Mephisto would be the one controlling Scarlet Witch for his own nefarious ends. Although we know the secret villain was Agatha Harkness (and Wanda herself to some extent) the showrunner of the series revealed she had no idea who Mephisto was when working on it.
When speaking to Mashable about the series, executive producer Jac Schaeffer explained that it wasn’t a conscious intention to tease fans with Mephisto, noting that it was a genuine coincidence that there were devilish references scattered throughout the show. The producer went on to say that the real villain of the show was Wanda’s grief for Vision. Take a below.
“There was never any conscious intention on my part to create any Mephisto red herrings because I didn’t know who Mephisto was until I started doing press. Why did we talk about the devil so much? That’s a real coincidence. He wasn’t ever part of our storytelling conversations. We were very clear that the big bad is grief. And then the external bad is Agatha. So as a viewer and as a lover of the show and the characters, I didn’t want anything more than that.”
