‘Westworld’ Star Ed Harris Explains Why Season 3 “Wasn’t The Most Joyous” To Film

Westworld star Ed Harris explained why the third season of the series was challenging to film.

The third season of HBO’s Westworld has found Ed Harris’ William, a.k.a the Man in Black, stripped of his fortune and incarcerated in a mental institution. In the most recent episode of the third season, Ed Harris’ William confronted multiple versions of himself in a sequence brought on by hallucinations.

These hallucinations were brought upon by his treatment at the institution, which involved Ed Harris’ William being strapped down and subjected to futuristic treatment. In an interview with Vulture, wherein William’s treatment was likened to torture experienced by Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange, Ed Harris indicated that these experience made filming the third season of Westworld challenging:

“You do what you gotta do. I mean, I signed on to play the Man in Black. I didn’t sign on to play the Man in White. So it wasn’t the most joyous season for me, I gotta say.”

Ed Harris elaborated, saying, “It’s not so hard to embody, but it’s hard to feel like something I’m really enjoying doing.”

Here is the official series synopsis for HBO’s Westworld:

Westworld isn’t your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park — which is looked after by robotic “hosts” — allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park’s guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged. “Westworld” — which is based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name — features an all-star cast that includes Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe winner Ed Harris.

Westworld season 3 stars Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores, Thandie Newton as Maeve, Ed Harris as Man in Black, Jeffrey Wright as Bernard, Tessa Thompson as Charlotte, Luke Hemsworth as Stubbs, Simon Quarterman as Lee Sizemore and Rodrigo Santoro as Hector Escaton. New cast members include Aaron Paul, Vincent Cassel, Lena Waithe, Scott Mescudi a.k.a. Kid Cudi, Marshawn Lynch, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Ealy, and Tommy Flanagan.

Westworld season 3 airs on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
