‘What If…?’ Season 2 Couldn’t Use A Key Marvel Character

A secret restriction!

What If Season 2 Marvel The Watcher

It seems even the multiverse has its limits. The head writer for What If…? Season 2 has revealed that the creative team behind the series couldn’t use a key Marvel character.

What If…? Season 2 was a surprising holiday treat for Marvel fans, with the Disney Plus series serving nine days of pure multiverse bliss. However, it seems even the MCU’s wildest series has its limits, with the show’s head writer AC Bradley revealing that her team was unable to use Sam Wilson as Captain America due to the series’ production timeline.

“We also couldn’t do Sam Wilson’s Captain America because, we didn’t know when that would be coming out,” AC Bradley explained on the Phase Zero podcast. “Again, we were writing Season 2 as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier paused shooting and the scripts were being re-written because of other things. We don’t know when anything is airing. So, we couldn’t touch it because we’re not allowed to introduce… It makes sense, you let the character live in live-action first and then go play in the multiverse.”

It certainly makes sense that Marvel wouldn’t want Sam Wilson’s debut as Captain America in the MCU to be in an animated anthology series. However, it is definitely a shame that he wasn’t able to at least make a cameo in What If…? Season 2. Though with Season 3 already deep into production, it’s likely he’ll make his animated Disney Plus debut sooner rather than later!

A Multiverse of Possibilities

What If…? features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series “flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways,” according to Marvel’s official description of the series.

In addition to the second season of What If…?, Marvel is also working on two more animated series — Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year. The former is a direct spin-off of What If…? episode five, which revolves around a Marvel Cinematic Universe that suffers from a zombie plague.

All episodes of What If…? season 2 are now available to stream on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
