Will Smith is open to the idea of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad getting released.
One of the biggest in all of DC fandom was seeing Zack Snyder’s Justice League see the light of day. The film was famously reshot by Joss Whedon and re-edited, which didn’t align with Snyder’s intended vision for the iconic superhero team. The director’s cut was met with near-universal acclaim and set a precedent for future DC properties to get the same treatment.
Fans have been hoping for David Ayer’s original cut of Suicide Squad to get released. Ayer famously made it clear that the film was taken out of his hands and re-edited without his permission, resulting in a final product that went against his original plans. The #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement has received some momentum but not as much advocacy as the release of Zack Snyder’s films. However, the tide might be changing, as Will Smith, one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood, has advocated for Ayer’s original vision to get the respect it deserves.
Speaking with Variety, Will Smith was asked what he thought about the fan campaigns regarding David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and if he would like to see the original cut of the film released. Smith replied enthusiastically, pointing out how a lot of footage was left on the cutting room floor.
Will David Ayer’s Suicide Squad finally get released? Frankly, anything is possible. With Will Smith advocating for it, it’s clear that even the stars from the DC project want to see the original vision in the hands of fans.
Here is the synopsis for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad:
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Written and directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, and Scott Eastwood.
