‘Spider-Man’ Star Willem Dafoe Addresses Green Goblin Mask Complaints

Back to formula?

Willem Dafoe Green Goblin Spider-Man: No Way Home

Willem Dafoe recently discussed the complaints some have had about the Green Goblin mask in the Spider-Man films.

The Green Goblin is no easy character to translate into live-action, and that’s been evident in the original Sam Raimi films, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and in No Way Home. When it comes to Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin appearance, one of the major criticisms from fans over the years is that it looks like something out of Power Rangers.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, we see the original Green Goblin mask again, but not for very long. Quickly after his return, the mask gets destroyed. Willem Dafoe then sports a new look featuring a purple hood and goggles. In an interview with The New York Times, the Spider-Man star talked about the complaints and how it influenced his new No Way Home apperance:

“I must be honest, I am aware that there was some criticism of that [Green Goblin] mask in the original one. We heard it enough that it was probably a consideration, to change it up a little bit. I don’t think about that because I don’t think about emoting with my face. My face follows my heart. It’s just an expression of what you’re feeling.”

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Marvel’s No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, and Tom Hardy.
