Winston Duke believes M’Baku could be the perfect villain for the Black Panther sequel.
One of Marvel’s most critically-acclaimed and nuanced films was 2018’s Black Panther, which tackled heavy topics such as race, inter-generational trauma, and legacy all while remaining a fun super-hero film. One of Black Panther’s most memorable characters was Winston Duke’s M’Baku, who was the leader of the Jabari tribe. In the film, Winston Duke’s character opposed T’Challa becoming the king of Wakanda. The conflict between both characters led to some of the most rewarding moments in Black Panther.
Of course, M’Baku and T’Challa put their differences aside to fight for the future of Wakanda, which was featured prominently in Avengers: Infinity War. With a Black Panther sequel on the horizon, Winston Duke is excited for what’s next for M’Baku. Speaking to ScreenRant to promote the upcoming film Spenser Confidential, Winston Duke revealed how he sees his Black Panther character as a villain, despite him appearing as a hero.
“[M’Baku] is a hero, but he has so much going on. I think what makes a really great villain is that they have the power of seeing things their own way, and they can define their own circumstances.
And that’s what’s really cool about all the MCU villains so far as well. Loki always sees things his own way, and he chooses when he’s going to be an ally or an antagonist. Thanos always had the power of self-definition. That’s his greatest strength. It wasn’t the rings, it wasn’t his superpower or the fighting. It’s that he made his mind up and said, “This is how I define justice.” Because he wasn’t a bad guy; he’s just a dude who was seeking ultimate justice and balance. That’s not bad. But he defined it himself, and all the really great villains that Marvel interrogates always have that ability, so they can go anywhere.”
Winston Duke’s rationale for being a villain is pretty spot, especially considering the clashes M’Baku and T’Challa had in Black Panther. While all seemed to be well at the end of the film, and they fought alongside each other in the last two Avengers films, it’s entirely possible that their friendship was more out of necessity than anything else. Details on the Black Panther sequel are slim, though it’s certain that Winston Duke will be returning as his fan-favorite character. Hopefully director Ryan Coogler gives Winston Duke to flex his villainous muscles in the Black Panther sequel.
