Does the MCU already have its Wolverine? The latest rumor suggests that Hugh Jackman may be retaining his role as the iconic X-Men.
Hugh Jackman has had one of the most successful runs as a superhero in history. He managed to carry an entire cinematic universe on his back as Wolverine, culminating in one of the most beloved send-offs for any hero in film. Many fans view the actor’s transition into the MCU as a victory lap, able to do all the crossovers he never could with the X-Men alone before hanging up his claws one final time.
Yet now it seems that victory lap may be turning into yet another marathon. The latest rumor from DanielRPK reveals that Hugh Jackman won’t be putting down his claws at the end of the Multiverse Saga, with Marvel wanting to bring him back in multiple MCU projects following its culmination with Avengers: Secret Wars in late 2027.
Is The MCU Getting A New Wolverine?
There’s, truthfully, two ways to take this rumor. The first is that, due to Kevin Feige getting his start on the original X-Men films, he has a soft spot for Hugh Jackman’s take on the character. As such, he’ll be bringing the actor back as Wolverine in the MCU for as long as he can, bringing Deadpool and Wolverine‘s joke about Jackman playing the character until he’s 90 to pass.
The less cynical take on the rumor is that Kevin Feige holds a great reverence for Hugh Jackman’s time as Wolverine and doesn’t think they can top his performance in the MCU. As such, while they’ll keep him around as a mentor in the X-Men films, the main mantle of Wolverine will be passed on to a new character. Most likely Dafne Keen’s X-23.
