Wonder Man is an upcoming Disney Plus show helmed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. A new plot synopsis released reveals the first details of the plot, as well as Simon Williams’ job at the heart of Hollywood.
Despite having begun production in earnest back in April, Marvel has seemingly been careful to release any details about Wonder Man aside from casting information, such as the lead being played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The only reason fans even found out it was filming was from the show’s executive producer and Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Instagram post! Luckily for fans, The Hollywood Reporter has released a brand new synopsis for the show that reveals it’ll focus on Simon Williams’ time in Hollywood:
“The series gives a superhero’s perspective on the entertainment industry, centering on a Hollywood stuntman and actor trying to make it big in the movies.”
While Simon Williams is best known for his time as an actor and stuntman, with one multiversal variant even being called Hollywood, he actually didn’t move out to the West Coast until after his tenure on the Avengers! In the comics, Simon Williams was a wealthy son of a munitions factory owner who, after embezzling funds his brother Eric got from the Maggia, was put in jail and recruited by the Masters of Evil to get revenge on Tony Stark, who he believed destroyed his business, eventually joining the Avengers as Wonder Man in the process.
The reason for this change should be extremely obvious to anyone who has watched the MCU. Having an origin so similar to Tony Stark is one thing, but tying yet another character to him in a universe filled with so many other characters linked to him may seem a bit overplayed to many fans, even if its comic book accurate. Taking the leap straight to Hollywood is sure to set apart Wonder Man from any other MCU project before it!
Who is Marvel’s Wonder Man?
Wonder Man is a superhero from the Marvel Comics universe with a unique backstory. Created by Stan Lee and Don Heck in 1964, Wonder Man was originally a successful businessman who underwent a dangerous experiment to gain superhuman powers. However, his powers came with a weakness to ionic energy, making him vulnerable to attacks from other ionic-powered beings.
Wonder Man has been a member of several superhero teams, including the Avengers and the West Coast Avengers. He has also had a complicated romantic relationship with Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch. Marvel’s Disney Plus series is expected to delve deep into Wonder Man’s complex history and personality.
Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Community) is leading the writing team of the Wonder Man series, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton on board as an executive producer. Cretton is also expected to direct an unspecified number of episodes before moving on to the yet-to-be titled Shang-Chi sequel and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
