‘Wonder Woman 1984’: Patty Jenkins Reveals Why She Cast Kristen Wiig As Cheetah

Patty Jenkins explains why she cast Kristen Wiig as Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984.

The choice that Patty Jenkins made is certainly an unconventional pick, given that Kristen Wiig hasn’t been associated with franchise work aside from Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, and this movie has her playing Cheetah, a role that’s a far cry from a heroic scientist turned ghost-hunter. But Patty Jenkins had confidence in Kristen Wiig as an actress, and according to her interview with CinemaBlend, it paid of considerably in the film itself.

Here’s what Patty Jenkins had to say about Kristen Wiig below:

“We were super fans of Kristen, and we love how funny she is, but also I’ve been a huge admirer of what a great actress she is for a long time. So when we needed someone to go all the way from one end of the spectrum of being funny, sweet Diana’s friend, all the way to a totally different place, we knew that Kristen Wiig would kill it, and she went beyond our wildest dreams.”

As it stands, we have seen very little of Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva (and not her Cheetah alter-ego) in the initial trailer. Since Cheetah’s appearance will likely make use of visual effects, it’s probably that more of the character is being saved for the next trailer.

Plot details on the Wonder Woman 1984 are being kept under lock and key, but the film is said to follow Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince as she comes into conflict with the Soviet Union in the 1980s and encounters a formidable new adversary named Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. Along the way, Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor somehow comes back from the dead, and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord somehow factors into the story.

Directed by Patty Jenkins from a script she co-wrote with David Callaham and a treatment she developed with Geoff Johns, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wigg, Pedro Pascal, Natasha Rothwell, Ravi Patel, Gabriella Wilde, Connie Nielson, and Robin Wright.

Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters on June 4, 2020.
