Marvel may be going all in on X-Men ’97! The head of streaming for the studio reveals they’re considering greenlighting the Disney Plus series for season 4 and 5.
It’s no secret that X-Men 97 was a massive win for Marvel. In a time when their Disney Plus offerings, especially the animated ones, were being perceived as incredibly lackluster- the series managed to revive interest in the world of animated heroes. This so much so that the show was already greenlit for season 3 before season 2 is even out.
Yet it seems Marvel may yet be considering renewing X-Men ’97 for even more seasons. Brad Winderbaum, who serves as the head of streaming, television, and animation for the studio, recently spoke on if there was anything more planned for the series beyond season 3. The executive confirmed that there was- with seasons 4 and 5 reportedly already being discussed for Disney Plus.
“There is definitely, more than possibly, more to come from X-Men ’97,” Winderbaum told Collider. “We’re talking about Seasons 4 and 5 now.”
Will X-Men ’97 Change With Season 2?
While the idea of having seasons 4 and 5 of X-Men ’97 canned and ready to go years in advance is an exciting one, fans of the series are still worried about season 2. The project is under a new showrunner, Matthew Chauncey, after original helmer Beau DeMayo was fired from Marvel following allegations of severe misconduct. Yet Brad Winderbaum assures fans that the team behind the Disney Plus series remains (mostly) unchanged.
“Same director, same producers, same cast, many of the same writers, and it’s standing on the shoulders of giants. One thing that makes X-Men ’97 work so well is that everybody’s rowing in exactly the same direction. Everyone that works on the show knows that original series inside and out.”
“And we work very closely with Eric and Julia Lewald and Larry Houston [creators of X-Men: The Animated Series]. They’re here all the time reviewing material and talking to the artists. The second season feels very much a worthy successor to the first season.”
Given how quickly the superhero and streaming landscape is changing, it’ll be interesting to see how seasons 4 and 5 of X-Men ’97 look when they finally hit Disney Plus (if they actually do). Hype is already picking up for season 2 before the trailer even releases. So, if all goes well, Marvel may very well have a hit machine in their midst.
