The X-Men reboot finally has its director! Kevin Feige reveals his mindset in bringing the iconic Mutant team into the long-established franchise.
Ever since it was announced that Marvel Studios had put a reboot for the X-Men into development, fans have been frothing at the mouth for any details they could get. Given Kevin Feige got his start in Hollywood as an associate producer on the original X-Men film, expectations are sky-high when it comes to bringing the characters into his claim to fame.
And it seems as though Kevin Feige is fully aware of the weight on his shoulders to get the X-Men right. The producer recently spoke on Marvel Studios’ approach to the reboot in a chat with Screen Rant. While he hopes to one day tackle the wide-ranging scale of the mutants’ comic roots, his top priority is making sure the characters are done right in their first outing.
“There’ve been more X-Men movies than there were Spidey movies or Fantastic Four movies, so a lot has been done. But again, because it’s because it’s almost a comic legacy onto itself, there’s so much more to tap into it and there’s so many sagas within sagas for X-Men that that’s part of what we’re talking about now is which saga to grow and build to while doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film.”
“I’m not going to speak to the makeup of the characters that will be in the first movie, but look at Galactus, look at Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, look at Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine. We want to embrace that which was not embraced 25 years ago when I was around on those early X-Men movies, which is those comic-accurate looks.”
The Director Of Marvel’s X-Men Reboot
After years of development, it does finally seem as though the reboot is finally coming together. Kevin Feige would go on to reveal that Marvel Studios has officially hired the director of the upcoming X-Men film. Surprising nobody to follow the rumor mill, the project will be helmed by Jake Schreier, best known for his role on Netflix’s Beef and Thunderbolts.
“It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky,” Feige revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com “And we’re very, very lucky to have him and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway.”
“Jake’s an incredibly smart guy, and he’s an incredibly talented filmmaker. We had a great experience with him on Thunderbolts*. And if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions, he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic.”
“He’s younger than me for sure, but he’s tapped into that in a way that I think was important for Thunderbolts*, much more important for X-Men. Because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.”
Marvel Studios has had a hit-or-miss history with directors. Some have derailed projects, while others have pulled them from the absolute depths to become something better. For now, Jake Schreier falls in the latter camp. Though with how much the franchise’s future hangs in the balance of the X-Men, fans have to hope Kevin Feige’s gut pulled him in the right direction with this choice.
