Are the X-Men the TRUE bad guys of Avengers: Doomsday? A rumor suggests that the team may take more drastic measures than some fans might be used to.
This weekend, while the rumor mill was taking a break ahead of what’s likely to be a disappointing Super Bowl for superhero fans, some major news about Avengers: Doomsday seemed to fall into the laps of fans. When speaking about his return in to the iconic role of Magneto, X-Men star Sir Ian McKellen teased that Magneto may end up destroying New Jersey in the film.
Not one to be undone, the rumor mill immediately supplied supporting evidence to this claim by Sir Ian McKellen. Perhaps the most interesting came from Alex Perez at the Cosmic Circus, who shared a photo from one of the X-Men‘s most iconic storylines: Ultimatum. The comic shows Magneto trying to destroy the world following the death of his kids, leaving some to wonder if that may end up being adapted in Avengers: Doomsday.

The Legacy Of The X-Men
Following this post, Alex Perez expanded on how the X-Men universe fans know and love has been changed heading into Avengers: Doomsday. His rumor suggests that the mutants may be living in a Utopia. However, one of the main questions going into the film is what sacrifices actually takes to make the world better, and if that’s worth it in the end.
“In Doomsday, the X-Men universe we get to see in the movie is a variant universe where events similar to that of the OG trilogy + [Days of Future Past] occurred, just to make it simpler for the audience to not do that much homework. What is new, is that this universe exists as a utopia for humans and mutants.”
“But you have to wonder…what exactly happened prior to that that allowed this utopia to exist? What sacrifices had to be made for the greater good? And that question is the general motif of Doomsday.”
“What would you be willing to sacrifice to gain what you want? To succeed? To save the ones you love? Your morals? Your beliefs? Your powers? Your mortality? Your life? The question isn’t are you prepared to die? The question is, who will you be, when you close your eyes?”
Given prior Avengers films have always touched on questions of power, and how to responsibly use it, this rumor certainly isn’t the most out there to have been stated about Avengers: Doomsday. And while it may be sad to see the X-Men do things nobody could have ever wanted them to do, it’ll certainly lead to some amazing emotional gut punches.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in December 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
