Xolo Maridueña is feeling the hype! The Blue Beetle actor expressed his excitement to rejoin the DC Universe with his upcoming animated series.

One of the most surprising pieces of news to come out of the DC Universe in recent weeks was the fact that Xolo Maridueña would be returning as Jaime Reyes for a Blue Beetle animated series. When speaking about this announcement, Maridueña revealed his excitement to explore things that are only possible in a television format.

“Wowza, Blue Beetle is back! I’m so excited,” Maridueña explained during a recent appearance on the Lone Lobos podcast. “To get to do the…I think there is an opportunity on each platform to really make something shine, right? In the movie, you had the opportunity to do the movie stuff. In a TV show, you have the chance to do long-format stuff.”

One of the biggest things fans are hoping for out of the Blue Beetle animated series is to expand the supporting cast. While Xolo Maridueña’s initial outing in the DC Universe had a large focus on his family, it left many of Jaime Reyes’ most iconic friends on the bench, such as Brenda Del Vecchio and Paco Testas.

Xolo Maridueña’s Hopes For The Blue Beetle Animated Series

A longer format isn’t the only thing Xolo Maridueña is excited about when it comes to the new animated series. The actor expressed his hopes for the Blue Beetle show to get truly wild in its concepts, though admits he isn’t sure what direction they’ll be going when it comes to aligning with Jaime Reyes’ appearance in the old DC Universe.

“In an animated show…the f***ing fact this kid likes anime and can make whatever freaking weapon he wants and has this suit that lights up…” Maridueña continued. “If they do the suit right in animated, I wonder if it’s going to look exactly like the movie suit did or if it’s going to, depending on what the art style, if it’s going to look a little bit different [or the same] for branding and all that.”

It makes sense that, this early in the process, Xolo Maridueña would have no idea how a Blue Beetle animated series would actually look. Though given James Gunn’s commitment to a cohesive DC Universe, it’s likely his costume in the project will be how Jaime Reyes looks in any future films.
