Disney’s upcoming live-action film, Peter Pan and Wendy has cast Black-ish star Yara Shahidi as the famous fairy, Tinkerbell.
Disney has enjoyed a huge amount of success with its live-action adaptations of its animated films. Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast all earned well over $1B worldwide with others like The Jungle Book and Maleficent also being huge moneymakers and the company intends to keep this going. Currently, the studio has live-action adaptations of The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan in the works. Now the latter has added a new cast member to its roster.
According to a new report from Deadline, Black-ish star Yara Shahidi has been cast as Tinkerbell. It marks the first time that a person of color has portrayed the iconic fairy who is traditionally played by a white actress. In her various appearances, Tinkerbell is Peter’s best friend and the source of the fairy dust that allows people to fly.

The story of the boy who never grew up had previously been adapted into live-action in the 2003 film, Peter Pan, from Universal Pictures and Sony. More recently, a prequel, titled Pan was released in 2015. More famously, however, was the 1991 film, Hook starring Robbin Williams that featured an adult Peter Pan returning to Neverland to battle Captain Hook one last time.
The upcoming live-action adaptation, Peter Pan and Wendy is being directed by David Lowery with Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson portraying the titular characters with Jude Law playing Captain Hook. The script is being written by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks who had previously worked together on the live-action version of Pete’s Dragon. The film is still slated for a theatrical release.
