Zachary Levi has admitted that, at one point, he was afraid that he was going to lose his Shazam! role because of Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson.

Last year, Zachary Levi’s Shazam! shocked audiences with just how good it was. It wasn’t the biggest moneymaker nor did it have nearly as much spectacle as other DC Extended Universe films, but the movie was easily the best-reviewed one in the lineup and a sequel is currently in development. At one point, however, Zachary Levi was afraid that he would lose the role.

For some time now, Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Black Adam film has been in development. This has lead many to question how the upcoming film would tie into the Shazam! films. While the Shazam! has confirmed that no plans for a crossover are currently in motion it did not stop star Zachary Levi from fearing that he would lose the role as a result of Dwayne Johnson’s involvement.

While speaking to Nerdbot, Zachary Levi revealed his fears of losing his Shazam Role because of Dwayne Johnson, citing how the characters were presented in the comics:

“Per the comic books, Black Adam and Captain Marvel – my true namesake – they’re yin and yang to one another. They are identical. It’s actually why I didn’t think I even had a chance of getting this job. He was already cast as Black Adam, I knew enough to know that Captain Marvel/Shazam and Black Adam were basically doppelgängers, just with a slightly different color scheme and haircut. I was like, ‘No one’s gonna hire me to be The Rock’s twin. don’t think this is going to work out.'”

Here is the plot synopsis for Zachary Levi’s Shazam!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
