Was it funny?

The recent Barbie film featured a quick jab about fans of the Snyder Cut. Justice League director Zack Snyder finally spoke about the joke in a recent interview.

The Barbie movie emerged as one of 2023’s most unexpected successes, impressing audiences with its quality, broad range of humor, and commercial performance. Among its many witty moments, a particular joke that playfully poked fun at fans advocating for the Snyder Cut of Justice League caught viewers by surprise. Nearly half a year after the film’s premiere, Zack Snyder has shared his thoughts on the joke.

“They gave us a heads-up,” Snyder revealed in a recent Men’s Health profile. “And [Warner Bros. CEO Michael DeLuca] said, ‘Hey, there’s a reference to Justice League in the movie. It’s cool and whatever, I hope you guys understand, we think it’s awesome…I thought [Barbie] was great, and I think the joke is pretty good.”

“The thing that I said to Debbie is – the thing that you need to take a second and think about is that your name is so seamlessly sewed together with a pop-culture phenomenon so big it can exist as a joke in a movie about Barbie. That’s pretty insane,” The director adds. “You just need to step back for a second and go like, ‘Whoa, what did we do? What happened? How is that a thing?'”

It’s no secret that the Snyder Cut and its fandom have become the butt of thousands of jokes in the comic book community. However, the Barbie film and Zack Snyder’s response to it show the attitude everyone should take to the joke: laugh and move on! If even the director of Justice League can get behind a few jabs, perhaps it’s time all fans allow a little more laughter in their lives.

The SnyderVerse era is over for now

The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.

Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.

In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
