Zack Snyder Explains Why Ben Affleck’s Batman Casting Was Perfect

Which Batman is best?

Is Ben Affleck the perfect Batman? Zack Snyder breaks down why he prefers Affleck’s version of the Caped Crusader over different actors such as Christian Bale.

Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe was truly the most controversial era of the DCU, but it seems almost everyone loved Ben Affleck as Batman. He was far from perfect in the eyes of many fans, and the actor lacked a proper solo film for the character, but many view his casting as the shining triumph of the Snyderverse.

Fans don’t seem to be the only ones to feel this way. It seems even Zack Snyder has a soft spot for Ben Affleck’s version of Batman. During a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Snyder explained he wanted Affleck as Batman because he was bigger than prior actors like Christian Bale, giving him a scary aura that captivates fans.

“That’s the reason why I wanted [Ben] Affleck, because, to me, Batman’s a big dude,” Snyder explained. “Affleck’s 6’4″, you know? He’s a legit big dude. And the shoes, the boots are like two inches, so he’s literally almost 6’6″ in the costume. When he comes out in the costume – I mean, we put some muscle on him, and there’s a muscle suit under the suit, and he’s, legitimately, a scary-looking thing.”

“You know, he’s just standing there, and you’re like, ‘Holy sh*t.’ Like, dude…the chin is so insane, in that cowl. I mean, look at him, he’s legitimately, that’s Batman to me.” He finished before adding. “[Christian Bale is] a great Batman, but he’s still, like, you know, 5’10”

The imposing nature of Ben Affleck as Batman is certainly a contributing factor as to why he was so great in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe. However, many fans also praised him for bringing a true sense of age to the role, showing off a Batman who was world weary and wavering in his beliefs.

Sadly, it seems Ben Affleck’s time as Batman has come to an end. While Affleck did make an appearance in The Flash, James Gunn and Peter Safran are set on recasting every member of Zack Snyder’s Justice League to avoid confusion for their new DC Universe. This includes Batman, who’ll be getting his own reboot titled Batman: The Brave and The Bold.

While the Snyderverse has ended on screen, that doesn’t mean it’s the end for the characters. Zack Snyder has expressed interest in continuing the story of his DC Universe in the form of a comic. Of course, Ben Affleck wouldn’t be able to return as Batman due to the nature of the medium, but it could mean the potential for fans to see the story of his incarnation of the character come to a close in the way it was always meant to.
