Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed who would’ve played Batman if Ben Affleck had passed on the role.

It’s hard to imagine the DC Extended Universe’s Batman being anyone other than Ben Affleck as the actor brought a perfectly moody gravitas to the Caped Crusader alongside Superman and Wonder Woman – but obviously there were other stars on the shortlist. And in a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zack Snyder revealed who would’ve picked up the cowl if Ben Affleck wasn’t interested.

When speaking to Josh Horowitz, Zack Snyder revealed that Matthias Schoenaerts was also in the running to play Batman in the DCEU if Ben Affleck passed on the opportunity. He’s recently been seen in Netflix’s The Old Guard, and previously appeared in Red Sparrow and The Danish Girl. Although Snyder did note that the Schoenaerts had reservations about playing a 40+ year old hero while in his thirties. Take a look below.

“I was talking to him a lot about it.  never got in the suit, but I did do a bunch of mock-ups of him, because Ben was on the fence. And I don’t blame him. Everyone should be on the fence when you’re asked, ‘Do you want to play Batman?’”

What do you make of Matthias Schoenaerts being considered for Batman? Did you like the star’s performance in The Old Guard? Sound-off in the comments below!

Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:

“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”

The Snyder Cut stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, JK Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
