Zack Snyder’s Justice League wasn’t nominated for the Oscar Fan Favorite prize – here’s why!
Arguably the most popular film from last year, Zack Snyder’s Justice League shattered expectations by actually seeing the light of day. The four-hour magnum opus from director Zack Snyder was released thanks to the efforts of fans from across the world, as well as several key industry figures who vied for the director’s cut to debut.
This year, the Oscars will be changing things up by awarding a film based on the votes from audiences. Dubbed the Fan Favorite prize, Zack Snyder’s Justice League isn’t eligible for the historical first from the Academy. Here’s why:
Each film that is eligible for the Fan Favorite award has to meet certain requirements, which the DC film didn’t meet, mostly in part due to its straight-to-streaming nature. The rules note:
“An entrant’s Favourite Movie can be any of the eligible movies for The 94th Academy Awards – all movies are displayed on the Oscars website. Home movies or films which are/were not eligible CANNOT be used as Favourite Movie.”
The rules explicitly state that an eligible film would have to be a film that has at least a seven-day theatrical run. Beyond that, Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a director’s cut of a previously released film. While it’s up for debate if the new version of the DC franchise is an entirely new film, the Academy opted not to nominate it.
Zack Snyder fans fret not, as the Oscars recently released the list of films that are nominated for the Fan Favorite award and Army of the Dead is among them! Other familiar favorites include Dune, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Suicide Squad!
Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Both versions of Justice League are available to stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DCEU, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
