During his Batman v Superman live commentary, director Zack Snyder revealed more details about Martian Manhunter’s role in the film.
Last year, Zack Snyder revealed that Harry Lennix’s General Swanwick would’ve transformed into Martian Manhunter during his Justice League cut, but the director discussed the character’s arc a little deeper during his live stream of Batman v Superman. Although the character’s alter-ego wasn’t revealed during Batman v Superman, it’s still interesting to re-watch the film knowing Harry Lennix is secretly playing Martian Manhunter.
Zack Snyder explained that Martian Manhunter notices the relationship between Lois Lane and Clark Kent while also noticing that latter is Superman in disguise. The director praised Harry Lennix’s performance and noted that Lois and Swanwick already have an established dynamic thanks to previously meeting in Man of Steel. It would have made the planned Martian Manhunter reveal in Justice League a good surprise for the team-up film if Zack Snyder’s plan had gone ahead.
“Harry Lennix is pretending to be a human being but does a great job, but has this relationship with Lois that started in Man of Steel if you kind of track their relationship. Harry understands there’s a relationship between Lois and Clark, who he knows, of course, is Superman.”
