Adam Driver Confirms Lucasfilm Changed Kylo Ren’s Arc In ‘Star Wars’

Which version is better?

Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker Kylo Ren Adam Driver

Kylo Ren’s character arc was one of the most divisive parts of the most recent Star Wars trilogy. Yet according to Adam Driver, the story was a lot different before Lucasfilm stepped in.

Kylo Ren started out as one of the most interesting characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens given his fragile emotional state and passion for his mission. However, nearly all of that nuance was gone by the time of Rise of Skywalker, with the villain having been redeemed and sharing a kiss with Rey as a “force dyad”. Yet according to Adam Driver, his story was much different at the start of the trilogy:

“I had an overall arc in mind that he wanted to do, which then changed,” Driver explained in a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Show. “His [Abrams] idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader, where Vader starts the most confident, the most committed to the Dark Side, and by the last movie he’s the most vulnerable, and weak, and he wanted to start at the opposite, where this character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies would be most committed to the Dark Side.”

It seems as though the changes were almost entirely due to the behind-the-scenes turmoil at Lucasfilm in bouncing between directors for the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Kicking Kylo Ren out as the villain was also certainly behind the unceremonious return of Palpatine. Hopefully, like many prequel characters, Adam Driver has a chance to return to Lucasfilm in the future and redeem himself.
