Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is officially returning to the franchise to helm the sequel, as shown in the film’s first official set photo.

Alongside the announcement that the director would be returning to the Monsterverse franchise, came confirmation of the principal cast for the sequel and a brief synopsis that teases “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world” that will force Godzilla and Kong to join forces.

The film is slated for release in March 2024, with a MonsterVerse TV series also currently in the works for Apple TV+.

Godzilla & Kong Join Forces

The first image from the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel shows director Adam Wingard back on set in what looks like it could be a Monarch facility.

It was also announced that the sequel would welcome back Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle, with Dan Stevens and Fala Chen joining the cast as Monsterverse newcomers.

Legendary’s Monsterverse began with 2014’s Godzilla and has since grown to include Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. At the heart of the franchise has been the secret monster-hunting organization Monarch.

As well as a new threat, the short synopsis revealed for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel promises a story that will “delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond,” as well as a “mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings.”

With production just beginning, fans of the Monsterverse will have to wait until March 2024 for more answers on the exact nature of the ancient threat being faced by Godzilla and Kong in the upcoming sequel.

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

Created by Matt Fraction and Chris Black, the upcoming series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. WandaVision‘s Matthew Shakman is directing two episodes of the series. Safehouse Pictures’ Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold along with Toho Co.’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita are also on board as executive producers.
