Is Agent Venom headed to the big screen? A new rumor suggests that Sony Pictures is already planning their next project with the Venom symbiote.
Despite mixed reviews, Venom: The Last Dance has been a massive success for Sony Pictures. The film has already grossed over $300 million on a $120 million budget, much of that coming from the international box office. This has seemed to renew the studios’ vigor to produce live-action films based on their Spider-Man characters, with their prospects having reportedly been doured after a string of controversial flops.
Yet with Venom: The Last Dance seemingly bringing Tom Hardy’s time as the symbiote hero to an end, Sony Pictures needs a new character to pick up the torch. This is seemingly coming in the form of Agent Venom, with insider DanielRPK revealing that the project is currently in development for the studio. It’s currently unclear how far into the development the film is, nor if the studio has a writer or director involved at this early stage.
Who Is Agent Venom?
Agent Venom is a mantle taken up by a name that may be surprising to those who only watch Spider-Man films. Most casual fans know Flash Thompson as the bully who endlessly tormented Peter Parker in high school, despite being a massive fan of Spider-Man. But in the comics, the character would eventually enlist in the army to fight in the Iraq War. This would lead to him losing his legs while saving his partner from enemy fire, with the US government awarding him a Medal of Honor for his brave service.
Flash Thompson was eventually recruited by the US government once more in Project: Rebirth 2.0, which gave him the Venom symbiote in order to create the ultimate super soldier: Agent Venom. It’s unclear how closely Sony Pictures will stick to this origin if the rumor is true, but it’ll certainly be an interesting film to see come to life given how the recent Venom films have panned out.
