Avengers: Doomsday is already doing some good! Alan Cumming reveals his return as Nightcrawler was “healing” following a “miserable” last go-around as the character.
With Avengers: Doomsday in production, there’s been a lot of discourse about the messy production of Marvel movies. However, it’s important to note that the superhero genre has always been plagued with truly terrible production timelines. Perhaps the most infamous example of this is the production of X-Men 2, where the cast had to confront director Bryan Singer about his narcotics use following a stunt that injured Hugh Jackman.
Alan Cumming, who played Nightcrawler in the franchise, has been one of the most vocal about his experiences on set. He’s spoken at length about the miserable hours spent in make-up chairs and the issues stemming from Bryan Singer’s leadership. However, it seems as though Avengers: Doomsday has gone a long way in righting those wrongs, with Cumming calling the experience “healing”.
“It was actually really great to go back. And especially, I’m 60 years old. I did not think I would be doing stunts, playing a superhero in my 60s. So that was great. And everyone was really nice. And I got it done really quickly because I couldn’t go, because of The Traitors, when most of my scenes were being shot.”
“So I squashed them all together, and got a green screen and various things and little scenes of people here and there,” Cumming finished on People.com. “But it was pretty stealthy.”
The Messy Production Of Avengers: Doomsday
Like many other superhero projects, Avengers: Doomsday has had its fair share of issues. The film is using the “Marvel Method”, where the script isn’t finished prior to principal photography. In this case, the issues of the Marvel Method are exacerbated by the fact that the writers still don’t have every actor they might want to use signed on to the project.
This isn’t even to mention the financial landscape surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. Superhero films may be breaking records at the domestic box office, but the international market has turned against a lot of films made in America, resulting in some major drops in films’ overall gross. A lot is riding on the film being a win, but whether or not it will be is up in the air.
