Andrew Garfield opened up about Spider-Man: No Way Home not receiving a Best Picture nod at the Oscars.
Spider-Man: No Way Home may have been the biggest film of the year but it’s not swinging for Oscar glory. Despite the best efforts of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, Tom Holland’s Spidey threequel failed to secure a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. It did, however, manage to land a Best Visual Effects nod, which it shares with fellow Marvel nominee Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
While some are disappointed that superhero films, despite their cultural relevance, continue to get shafted at the Oscars, others believe that the so-called “CGI-fests” don’t deserve much industry praise. Regardless of where you stand on the topic, it’s hard to deny just how monumental Spider-Man: No Way Home was for cinemas and the cinemagoing experience in the wake of the pandemic.
Andrew Garfield, who received a nomination for Best Actor for Tick, Tick…BOOM!, echoed this sentiment while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter when asked about Spider-Man: No Way Home not receiving a Best Picture nod.
“I’m not able to comment on that, particularly. I really love that movie and I really love Amy [Pascal] and Jon Watts and Kevin [Feige] and, obviously Tom [Holland], and Zendaya and Jacob [Batalon] and Tobey [Maguire] and all the cast.”
“That movie has been a kind of juggernaut of proportions that I don’t think any of us really expected. I can only speak for myself and I just feel grateful to be a part of something that is keeping cinemas alive right now, keeping cinemas full, and helping in that regard and making sure that the live experience or the communal experience of going to the movies remains intact.”
“It’s very, very cool to see audiences still deeply longing for the thing that I know that we’re all deeply longing for. I think Spider-Man is obviously one of those movies right now and that’s so cool, and I’m so, so grateful to be a part of that.”
Talk about a class act! Andrew Garfield has managed to successfully navigate between superhero films and Oscar darlings like Hacksaw Ridge in recent years. While many believe that films from the likes of Marvel and DC aren’t worthy of Oscar glory, projects like Black Panther and Joker have been nominated for multiple awards, including Best Picture. As Hollywood continues to release superhero films, there’s bound to be some diamonds in the rough that garner the Academy’s attention!
