Things got emotional for Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire while filming Spider-Man: No Way Home.

For many fans, the most defining aspect of Spider-Man: No Way Home was seeing Tom Holland’s Peter Parker teaming up with his big screen predecessors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. The image of seeing the three Spider-Men together facing off against five different villains was a sight to behold, and was clearly an emotional moment for audiences that spent roughly 20 years following these three different Peter Parkers on the big screen.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was not just emotional for audiences, but for the trio of Spider-Men as well. While promoting his new film Uncharted, Tom Holland spoke with THR about a personal moment he shared with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, also revealing that it served as inspiration for the trio’s farewell in the film’s finale:

“I said to [Maguire and Garfield], ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this. Thank you for being here. Thank you for elevating Spider-Man in the ways that you have. Thank you for being so gracious and allowing me to share this with you. Thank you for taking a leap of faith and coming back.’ Tobey hadn’t acted in nearly 10 years, so we all embraced each other, and we were all crying because it meant so much to us. And Jon Watts, Amy Pascal and the writers saw this moment between the three of us and were like, ‘Brilliant! Well, now we know how they’re going to say goodbye to each other.’ So essentially, we just reshot that very real moment between the three of us.”

The moment in which Tom Holland’s Peter Parker thanks both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Peters was a brilliant, and heartfelt meta moment in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Yes, the protagonist was thanking his variants for serving as wonderful mentors to him in perhaps the darkest moment of his life thus far, but the subtext behind the moment is also just as touching. After all, if it weren’t for Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire before him, Tom Holland would’ve never had the opportunity to bring the webhead to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
