Angela Bassett finally speaks out! The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star speaks on her shocking Oscar loss at last year’s Academy Awards.
Heading into the 2023 Oscar season, everyone was convinced that Angela Bassett would finally be getting her first Oscar for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. However, the night of the Academy Awards saw Jamie Lee Curtis take home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress, leaving many fans stunned at the outcome.
It seems the decision even came as a shock to Angela Bassett. Leading up to last weekend’s Academy Awards, the actress finally revealed her thoughts on losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Bassett claims that, while she was disappointed, disappointment is part of life, and she believes she handled the loss well.
What Angela Bassett says about losing the Oscar for Black Panther 2
“I was gobsmacked! I was,” Bassett told Oprah Winfrey during a recent interview. “I thought I handled it very well. That was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed and I handled it like a human being.”
“There are going to be these moments of disappointment that you’ll experience, but how do you handle yourself in the midst of them?” she continued. “We’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party anyway.”
Angela Bassett is far from the only snub in the history of the Academy Awards. In fact, many fans are getting deja vu about her Best Supporting Actress loss this year with Lily Gladstone’s loss for Best Actress In A Leading Role to Emma Stone.
The role of superhero actors at the Academy Awards has always been contentious. While actors like Joaquin Phoenix have won an Oscar for their role in comic book movies like Joker, many feel as though powerful performances get snubbed every year just because of the genre the film is in.
Luckily, the Academy Awards has tried its best to correct its faux pas and given Angela Bassett the recognition she deserves for her powerful role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Earlier this year, the actress received an honorary Oscar, even getting a small spotlight during this year’s show with a banner showing her win.
