Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was divisive among fans and critics alike, to the point many fans may have forgotten the film’s controversies before release. The biggest controversy was the decision to replace Emma Fuhrmann, who played Cassie Lang in Avengers: Endgame, with Kathryn Newton.
While Kathryn Newton was certainly the more established actor for action-focused projects, having previously starred in projects like Supernatural and Detective Pikachu, Marvel fans appreciated the emotion of Fuhrmann’s short performance in Endgame. This is a sentiment only bolstered by fans’ middling reception to Newton once the film released. Despite this, Quantumania director Peyton Reed defends his decision to recast Cassie, saying the film needed an actor that could “hang with” Paul Rudd:
“We’ve just introduced our now 18-year-old Cassie Lang. Kathryn Newton, of course, an actor who I have admired for a long time,” Reed spoke on the director’s commentary track for the film. “And when we were talking about Cassie in this movie, she’s aged five years since the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp. And I wanted someone in that role who could really hang with Paul Rudd and sort of not be left in the dust. She’s gotta be sharp, and quick, and funny. And also, [Newton] is an athlete. She’s a world-class golfer. She has the physicality for the role.”
It seems as though Peyton Reed never even considered Emma Fuhrmann to reprise her role as Cassie Lang in the film, ignoring the time jump in Endgame and focusing solely on the gap between Ant-Man and the Wasp and its sequel. While there’s no doubt Newton was qualified for the role, many fans may wish that Reed looked outside of the prior film for inspiration.
