Fans have been eagerly awaiting any news about Jason Momoa’s return as Arthur Curry in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Will a third set of reshoots save the film or doom it to the fate of The Flash in the new DC Universe?
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has had a troubled production almost on par with The Flash. The film has had three rounds of reshoots with Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Patrick Wilson’s Orm, an almost unprecedented number for a film with over a $200 million budget. This has caused fans to worry, especially as test screenings haven’t come back the most positive, potentially leading to another DC Universe flop.
This latest round of reshoots cut, not just one, but two versions of Batman. The original draft of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom featured a scene with Michael Keaton, who was meant to take over as Batman in the DC Universe. This was then replaced with a scene of Ben Affleck sometime in 2022. However, in this newest cut, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran opted to remove both actors from the film to avoid confusion and promising a film that wouldn’t come to fruition.
However, this latest round of reshoots may spell good news for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. With James Gunn and Peter Safran now involved (though Safran was already involved as a producer), reshoots with Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson reportedly wrapped earlier than expected, potentially spelling good fortune for the upcoming DC Universe film. Though given how optimistic the studio was about The Flash, fans should keep their expectations in check.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with both DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
