DC’s Aquaman has finally opened in U.S. theaters and it’s on its way to winning the holiday weekend.

This weekend, Aquaman opened in U.S. theaters but it has already surpassed its production budget in international grosses. Overseas, DC’s latest solo superhero film has amassed an impressive $350.7 million and now it could be looking at adding almost $100 million to that total.

According to a report from Variety, Aquaman is on its way to earning an opening weekend gross of $70 million dollars from  4, 125  U.S. locations. The movie kicked off the weekend with a haul of $28 million on Friday and has been dominating Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns at the U.S. box office. That $70 million opening would make Aquaman the lowest opening weekend for a DC Extended Universe film in the U.S. but given the massive overseas business and the upcoming holidays in the U.S., it could easily have the staying power to earn impressive numbers.

Last December, films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman had opening weekend grosses on the lower end but thanks to the holiday season and great word-of-mouth, both films earned very strong box office numbers before their theatrical run was over. The next installment of the DCEU will introduce another iconic superhero to the big screen. In April, comic book fans have quite a bit to look forward to. Not only do Hellboy and Avengers: Endgame open that month, but so does DC’s Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi as the titular hero.
