The long awaited DC Universe sequel Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is finally set to hit theaters this holiday season. Director James Wan recently spoke on the potential of a third film for Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a DC Universe sequel half a decade in the making. Fans will be treated to the long-awaited return of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry and Patrick Wilson as Orm in a brand new adventure through the kingdoms of Altantis. However, with the film still not releasing for over three months, James Wan reveals there’s still more stories to be told for Aquaman:
“What I like between this one and the first one is, you really do see the growth of Arthur. He starts off as this kind of wanderer, and in the second one he finally has more of a direction of what he wants to do with his life,” Wan revealed to EW. “If and when there is a third one, that’s what it should be; it should be growing these characters because I think we’ve set up certain things in a good place in the second movie that you can definitely draw upon in a third. I don’t have any stories, but growing the characters is the biggest thing that I think the next Aquaman movie should be about.”
However, fans shouldn’t take James Wan’s words to mean he’s fully on board with a sequel to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. After the 5 year development of this DC Universe sequel, the director reveals he’s hesitant to dive back in to the world of Atlantis, only focusing on taking a break:
“I don’t know. This film has taken up so, so much of my life, so much of my time,” Wan continued “All I can think about now is taking a long break.”
It’s certainly understandable James Wan would want a break from the world of Atlantis. Even aside from how long it took Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to release, the film was subject to grueling reshoots and studio meddling as executives tried to figure out the direction of the DC Universe. While this may be the last fans see of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, this upcoming adventure is sure to be outrageous!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
