West Side Story actress Ariana DeBose has joined Sony’s upcoming Kraven The Hunter film as Calypso.
After Tom Holland’s Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony decided to make a series of solo films based around everyone’s favorite web slinger’s villains. The first of these was Venom, followed up by its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage with a Morbius film also on the way. Now a film based around Kraven The Hunter is in development and the cast has steadily begun to fill out.
Last summer, it was revealed that Avengers: Age of Ultron star Aaron Taylor-Johnson was set to play Kraven The Hunter. Last month it was also revealed that Russell Crow had joined the cast in an undisclosed role with Fred Hechinger as Chameleon. Now the film has added Ariana DeBose to its roster.
Ariana DeBose is perhaps best known for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story for which she has been nominated for an Academy Award. According to a new report from Deadline, the actress is set to play Calypso in the upcoming Sony film. In the comics, Calypso is a voodoo priestess who, like Kraven The Hunter, is typically depicted as an enemy of Spider-Man. She is also the occasional lover of Kraven but has been dead in the main comics for some time. It is currently unknown whether she will be playing an ally or antagonist in the upcoming film.
Here is the synopsis for Sony’s next film, Morbius:
One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.
Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film stars Jared Leto as the lead anti-hero, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project with Lucas Foster, while Palak Patel will oversee for Sony.
