Avatar: The Way of Water is now the fourth-highest grossing of all time after overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the worldwide box office. The James Cameron sequel has so far earned more than $2.116 billion globally, passing The Force Awakens, which stands at $2.075 billion.
Last week, Avatar: The Way Of Water was nominated for five Oscars, including the big Best Picture award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has scheduled the 95th Academy Awards for March 13, 2023, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony for the third time. The event is being held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California.
The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing release in history with $2.923 billion. The movie was at one-point dethroned by the Marvel Studios feature Avengers: Endgame before a re-release put it back on top of the all-time box office charts.
The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.
