Another win for the Avatar sequel!

Avatar The Way of Water James Cameron

In a historic moment for the film industry, Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Titanic as the third-highest grossing movie of all time. The long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster Avatar has taken the world by storm, raking in an impressive $2.2433 billion at the box office. Titanic is currently at $2.2428 billion.

The achievement is a major milestone for director James Cameron, who has now created three of the four highest-grossing movie of all time with Titanic and the first two entries in the Avatar series. The Way of Water has been playing in theaters since this past December.

Avatar: The Way Of Water was recently nominated for five Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has scheduled the 95th Academy Awards for March 13, 2023, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony for the third time. The event is being held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California.

The first Avatar movie remains the highest-grossing release in history with $2.923 billion. The movie was at one-point dethroned by the Marvel Studios feature Avengers: Endgame before a re-release put it back on top of the all-time box office charts.

The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.
