Is Chris Hemsworth finally setting down the hammer? A rumor about Avengers: Doomsday suggests the film may be Thor’s last outing in the MCU.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Chris Hemsworth is one of the biggest stars to come out of the MCU. He’s one of the few members of the original Avengers team to still be active in the MCU, and the only one headlining their own film franchise. Yet with his tenure as Thor reaching nearly 15 years by the time Avengers: Doomsday drops, fans have started to wonder if it’s time for the actor to put down the cape for good.
Though it seems the end of his career as the God of Thunder may be closer than fans first thought. According to a new rumor from The Cosmic Circus, Chris Hemsworth’s time as Thor will come to a close during the events of Avengers: Doomsday. While the studio still wants to leave the door open for the actor to return at some point, they also want to make sure that the moment is one of the biggest in the entire MCU.
“From what we’ve heard, Thor will reunite with Loki at some point during these films. And he’ll essentially be one of the last OG Avengers remaining. Our friend Alex Perez did hear a rumor that Marvel wanted to give Chris Hemsworth’s Thor a proper send off in these movies in an epic way, with sources pointing to New Avengers (Vol. 3) #32 as the inspiration.”
“Although it could be the end of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor at that very moment, that doesn’t exclude the possibility of the character’s return as he has also been told the Thor Corps, as well as other parts of Thor’s mythology from the comics, will be adapted for Secret Wars and beyond.”
Will Thor Die In Avengers: Doomsday?
The specific comic that the rumor references, New Avengers (Vol. 3) #32, took place during 2015’s Secret Wars event. The issue sees Thor and Hyperion in a final stand against a horde of Beyonders, sacrificing themselves to stop the incursions threatening the multiverse. Given how heavily incursions tie into Avengers: Doomsday, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Chris Hemsworth’s Thor take a similar path towards the end of the film as a “final stand” in the MCU.
That being said, there’s no word on Hyperion appearing in the MCU, let alone Avengers: Doomsday. It’s likely that Marvel swaps the character out for one more closely tied to Chris Hemsworth’s version of Thor. Two likely candidates are The Mighty Thor, Jane Foster, and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. Then again, it’s possible he dies standing alongside a new hero, such as Lewis Pullman’s Sentry, or even Beta Ray Bill.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters in May 2026. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
