‘Avengers: Endgame’ Team Reveals Hidden Meaning Behind Black Widow Finding Hawkeye In Tokyo

During the audio commentary for Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers and writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely discussed the hidden significance behind Black Widow and Hawkeye’s reunion in Tokyo.

When Avengers: Endgame jumped ahead five years after Thanos’ decimation, fans learned Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was tracking Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye across the globe while he was operating as a ruthless and homicidal vigilante. When our heroes discovered a possible method of reversing Thanos’ decimation and bringing back everyone he erased from existence, including Hawkeye’s family, Black Widow ventured to Tokyo to talk the archer into joining them on the time travel heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones.

As co-writer Christopher Markus noted, Black Widow seeking out Hawkeye and offering him a chance to piece his life back together was not unlike what he did for her upon their first meeting:

“Well it’s also…It’s implied that this is essentially what he did for her when he pulled her out of being a Russian Agent.”

Joe Russo expanded on Markus’ comment, noting that while Hawkeye had been sent to kill Black Widow for her crimes, he instead opted to bring her back to S.H.I.E.L.D., a second chance that she was now offering him in Tokyo:

“That’s right it comes full circle, their relationship. Right? ‘Cause he had an opportunity to kill her and he changed her life, and now here she is – changing his.”

Scarlett Johansson is set to reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff in Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, though it is currently unknown if the film will reveal more about the character’s history with Hawkeye. For now, fans can relive their harrowing journey in Avengers: Endgame on all home media formats.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers:Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo,  Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Digital HD and will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on August 13.
