Ironhead Studio has posted a throwback image of the Mad Titan Thanos from behind the scenes of 2012’s The Avengers.
Fans everywhere remember staying past the credits of the first ever Avengers movie for the reveal of the true puppet master behind the invasion in New York. Audiences everywhere got a glimpse of the Mad Titan Thanos and his evil grin for just a moment, but that was more than enough. The villain was first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2012 and made his presence known in the box office juggernaut Avengers: Infinity War. There, the bald purple bad guy snapped his finger and did some serious damage. The character played by Josh Brolin was all CGI, but before Brolin took over the character, Damion Poiter played him in his debut and he almost wasn’t CGI.
An original sculpt made of Thanos was to be applied with other makeup to bring the Marvel fan favorite off the glossy pages and onto the big screen. But ultimately, Marvel Studios decided to have the character be completely done with the use of CGI. But Ironhead Studio did give fans a glimpse of what they almost got for their Mad Titan. Flashback to a day on set for The Avengers circa 2011. Jose was hired to design and sculpt this makeup to be applied to actor Damion Poitier, who portrayed Thanos in the post-credits scene. Although Thanos ended up getting a digital sheen for the film and eventually became fully digitally rendered in Avengers: Infinity War, Jose still has a soft spot for this practical makeup design. The appliances were painted and applied by Thom Floutz. #thanos #theavengers #specialfx #makeup #spfx #sculpt #marvel #marvelcomics #damionpoitier #infinitywar #fxmakeup #mcu #paramount #disney #superhero #stanlee #jackkirby #villian #ironheadstudio
This was some solid work from everyone involved. This could have been pretty cool to see but would have taken much more time to get done for the fast-paced production habits of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. I think either one works and think the character is arguably one of the best villains this franchise has ever seen. It will be interesting to see where Thanos is at after the “Snappening” in Avengers 4, which is scheduled to hit theaters next year.
Avengers 4 is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. Much of the cast of Infinity War is expected to return including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as well as Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. Here’s the film’s synopsis:
“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
Avengers 4 hits theaters May 3, 2019.
