Was Batgirl actually good? Jacob Scipio tells fans his personal review of the cancelled film and if he thinks it will ever see the light of day.
The cancelled Batgirl film will go down as one of the biggest tragedies in all of comic book film history. The movie was set to be the second in Warner Bros.’ initiative to bring the DC Universe to streaming (the first being Blue Beetle). The project would have starred Leslie Grace as the titular Batgirl, Michael Keaton as Batman, and Brendan Fraser as Firefly, among others like Jacob Scipio.
However, following Warner Bros. merger into Warner Bros. Discovery, Batgirl was cancelled along with dozens of other projects in order to be used as a tax write-off. This means that it would be legally impossible for the film to ever see the light of day. This is doubly tragic was, according to Jacob Scipio, the film was actually really good.
“I got the chance to watch it, and it was a phenomenal film,” Scipio told The Direct. “Man, I’m really sad the world never got to see it. But you know, you never know. You never know.”
Will Batgirl Ever Come Out?
Even though Batgirl is seemingly trapped in corporate purgatory forever, there have been cases where movies that were cancelled as a tax write-off have released. The most prominent example is Coyote Vs. ACME, which was purchased by Ketchup Entertainment. Jacob Scipio hopes that something like that could happen with Batgirl.
“It was great that they saved [Coyote Vs. ACME]. I’m gonna have a ticket and be buying my ticket and seeing that movie myself. So there’s always hope. Hollywood’s a funny place, and I think if enough people want it, it can happen.”
Of course, unlike Looney Tunes, Warner Bros. is putting all their chips on the DC Universe right now. So it’s possible that the studio doesn’t want to risk releasing a cancelled film and either confusing audiences or hurting their brand. Though, regardless, it seems as though even the cast of Batgirl holds out hope for the film to see the light of day.
