New Warner Bros. Schedule Points To ‘Batgirl’ Delay & Theatrical Release

Batgirl was first announced as an HBO Max exclusive.

A new Warner Bros. listing suggests that Batgirl will not arrive this year and that it will be released in theaters.

While Batgirl completed filming in the spring, the film still has no release date. Batgirl was expected to have a 2022 release on HBO Max, but that doesn’t seem likely since Ezra Miller’s The Flash has been delayed to Summer 2023, which will re-introduce Michael Keaton’s Batman before he appears in Batgirl.

Is Batgirl on the Move?

A new UK Warner Bros. schedule lists the film as a 2023 release in theaters. It’s worth noting that the UK doesn’t have HBO Max, so a theatrical release for Batgirl is the only option overseas regardless. However, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zslalav is reportedly keen on releasing DC films in theaters instead of HBO Max.

The studio was also reportedly looking to move the film from HBO Max to theaters following the success of The Batman. Blue Beetle was also slated initially for HBO Max but will now hit theaters next August. If Batgirl does end up ditching HBO Max, the DC film will still probably hit theaters after The Flash‘s June 23, 2023 release date. That means Batgirl could end up taking Blue Beetle‘s August 2023 date.

The upcoming film will star In the Heights’ Leslie Grace. Batgirl was last seen on the big screen in live-action portrayed by Alicia Silverstone in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin in 1997.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl. The movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. J.K. Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser will appear as the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton is returning as his version of Batman.
