‘Batwoman’ Showrunner On Why Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane Is Not Being Recast

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries recently revealed why Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane won’t be recast.

Last month, it was revealed that Ruby Rose would be exiting Batwoman, with the role set to be recast. It was later revealed that Rose left the role due to the long hours required for The CW show. The news came as a shock to many, especially those who were excited that the beloved Kate Kane finally had a live-action presence. Unfortunately, just a few days ago, it was revealed that Batwoman would not be recasting the role of Kate Kane, with the upcoming season focusing on a new character  taking on the mantle. After some silence, showrunner Caroline Dries revealed why Kate Kane won’t be recast and what the series’ intentions are going forward.

Speaking at the virtual ATX Television Festival (via Give Me My Remote) with Julie Plec, Dries revealed how Greg Berlanti helped make her decision.

“Greg helped me make this call — and he’s way smarter than me about this sort of stuff — he’s like, ‘You know, I think we should just reboot the character in terms of reboot Batwoman as a different character.’ Just to also respect everything that Ruby [Rose] put into the Kate Kane character.

Dries continued by discussing how not recasting Ruby Rose will make it easier for fans to immerse themselves within the new season.

“I just think it helps the audience a little bit, too, that we’re not asking them to not address the elephant in the room. I’m inventing a whole new character. In her past, she was inspired by Batwoman. She is going to take on the mantle and is completely maybe not be the right person at the time to be doing it. That’s what makes it fun.”

The reasoning to not replace Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane is perfectly sound and honestly helps make the show more lived-in. Seeing as Batwoman has had such an influence in the world, it would be great to see a brand new character take on the mantle, especially one who wants to continue Kate Kane’s legacy. While some fans may be disappointed by this news, it’s great that the showrunner is confident in the new direction the series is going in.
